| Macro Madness - The tightass guide to macro photography |
| 2008.12.02 00:40:01 | |
|
I've been going a little macro crazy the last few weeks. I think this is mainly because shooting macro doesn't require much effort in terms of finding locations, setting up lights, handling models/cars/whatever. Instead, I just go out into the garden with my Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lens, a few extension tubes, my D300 and an SB600 and just shoot whatever I can find that looks interesting. This photo was taken from my first shoot using extension tubes and I found out exactly why people like to invest in proper macro lenses. Hit the jump to read my gripes... | Lessons Learned - How to create separation... |

Last week my work had our client christmas party where the theme was 'Hawaii'. So that meant for a few days we had a whole bunch of Hawaiian props and such laying about the office. Therefore the day after the party I had a chance to play around with some of those props and practice a little studio lighting (because god knows I need it) with some colleagues and a really cool, large backdrop of a beach scene that was hung from the wall for the party. The photo shoot lasted 20 minutes and yielded 27 frames, approximately 10 of which were test shots. Most of the photos turned out 'good', but for me 'good' just isn't good enough. I want my photos to be 'great'. Hit the jump to see my thoughts on the results... Tags: flickr | photography Hits: 55 | Read more... |

| Ford Fairmont GS Photoshoot |
| 2008.11.16 20:49:39 | |
|
This photograph is probably my first commissioned work. I was asked to photograph this pristine conditioned Fairmont GS for a christmas present for the owner from his daughter. I was going to try and do something different with this, after I got the 'money shots', but I ended up with about an hour less time than I thought I would. This whole shoot was done in an hour and a half. Considering I'm still an 'amateur', this is the quickest I've ever shot a car and usually take at least 2 hours. I'd planned 3 hours for this shoot originally, but it kept getting cut shorter and shorter due to the fact that it is to be a surprise for the owner and we only had the one day while he was away to do it. It seems he was due back ealier than expected. Anywayz, all in all, I'm not too unhappy with this. The sky was still a little blown out and lacking in colour because it was still too early in the afternoon/evening, but a little lightroom magic was able to add some underexposed sky to the image. I also added a slight blue filter to it by way of a gradient mask. Other touch-ups were the windscreen was underexposed and parts of the shadow softened. I hope my 'client' will love this photo and that it does the car justice. I'm not really a Ford person, but even I was in awe at how beautiful this car looks and sounds. A real classic. | The Nikon D70s debuts! |
| 2008.11.12 09:49:38 | |
|
A while back I bought myself a Nikon D70s. At the time I already had the Nikons D100, D300, F100 and Pentax K1000, so people thought I was a bit crazy for wanting a lower-end camera. The reason I bought it was because I was learning about flash-sync speeds and the Nikon D70s is capable of syncing at about 4 times the speed of most other cameras. What's so good about that? Well, I wish I could show you, but I haven't had a chance to make use of it in the real world yet. I have a photo shoot coming up this weekend which I will attempt to make use of high-speed-sync techniques. Anywayz, I use the D70s as a sort of 'carry around point and shoot' camera so none of the photos are really worth making public. They're usually just for private consumption. Until today, that is. This photo is my first posted image that I've taken with the D70s. I had it with me at work today and on the way home I couldn't resist the colours the sky was producing so I had to pull over and take a photo. Not much post processing on this either (the colours really did look like that). There was a 'tiny' bit of saturation going on, but that's about it. I'm quite happy with the quality of this little camera, so I can't wait to take it for a spin for the purpose that I actually bought it. Tags: flickr | photography Hits: 67 | Read more... |

| Evonats '08 |

Last weekend was Evonats '08, an annual meet for the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution guys and boy do they know how to organise a get together. Starting with social events on the Friday night the weekend consisted of some circuit racing at Wakefield park on the Saturday and a hill climb event on the Sunday at the Sutton Forest hill climb track.
As always, I snapped up a few photos which can be seen on Flickr. Tags: car stuff Hits: 62 | Read more... |

EarthGirl's car had a little bit of a booboo the other night (Melbourne Cup Day). It was sitting there minding it's own business on the side of the street out the front of our house while I was watching TV and EarthGirl was cooking dinner, when suddenly we heard a really loud bangy smashy sound.

| Radiator hose go boom boom |
| 2008.11.01 05:58:06 | |
|
My car recently had some 'repairs' done to, part of which consisted of a replacement radiator. I've gone for the PWR 100mm full aluminium which keeps the motor crispy cool. I'm not sure if this problem is caused by the changes, but something very weird has happened. Driving home one day I noticed my air-con wasn't working as good as it usually does, so I was thinking about checking under the bonnet to see why, but I was hungry and couldn't be bothered so I parked the car in the garage. Turns out I'm lucky I didn't open the bonnet or I'd be in hospital with 3rd degree burns from boiling hot coolant exploding into my face. Anywayz, soon as I pulled into my garage there was a LOUD bang and a lot of steam. Not sure if it has anything to do with the air-con not working though. What appears to have happened is the cooling system has blocked up, built up pressure and the top radiator pipe has just let go in spectacular fashion. Repairs have already been completed and the problem written off as a faulty thermostat which has already been replaced as well. The thermostat was actually the original from 1997! I have this really cool website all set up but as it turns out, I don't usually have time to post anything to it. Fortunately, however, technology once again has an answer. I have now linked my website to Flickr, a website that I use quite a lot so that I can now post photos from Flickr on here directly, all in one swift action. This is my first post using this method and it seems to work beautifully. Expect many more to come in the near future. J Tags: flickr | photography Hits: 63 | Read more... |

| It's been a long time coming... |
| 2008.10.01 03:15:47 | |
|
My website has been neglected for quite some time now. I originally had the idea of making it an outlet for my twisted mind, but even that seemed to be too much of an effort. I have now, however, finally gotten off my ass and fixed things up. This incarnation of the website should do me for quite some time due to the fact that some of the content is dynamic and relies on Flickr, which I am currently addicted to. For now, I have just copied across some of the old articles from my previous website, just so there is something here, but I will try and keep this one updated with what is going on. For the geeks, I have decided to use Joomla! as my content management system. I've used Joomla! for quite some time now on other, work-related, projects so I am fairly familiar with it. I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a solid, easy to use and extendable content management system.

This site has been in disrepair for some time now. Life has gotten the best of me and is requiring most of my time. Here's a summary of some interesting stuff that has happened in the last 6 months:
Other than that, I just seem to be flat out all the time. Kinda sucks because all my projects are currently on hold. Oh well. I'm sure I will update this site at some point.

It is once again that time of the year where the gods grace us by opening up the heavens and releasing millions of flakes of icy goodness. That's right, the NSW snow fields are now open and the rusty, snow covered chairlifts chugger back to life. Tags: Hits: 109 | Read more... |
